Making the most of our last, and long, day

Posted by Paul Blacknell

We wanted to make the most of our last day so we set the alarm for 7.30 and 4 snooze alarms later I was in the gym with Tom and Harry for our final 4 minute super intense workout. I tell you, you start Tabata completely calm and finish with legs like jelly, heart rate in the 170’s, out of breath, sweating like you’ve done a 5k. You feel great after you’ve showered though.

We had planned today with military precision. Breakfast was back at the Paramount Diner on Charles Street where we didn’t go so overboard as before. Waffle with fruit came with at least a heaped mug of chopped fresh fruit, maple syrup was optional.

We had never taken the Swan Boat Ride in the Public Gardens when we lived here so wanted to now – subject to not being ripped off. It’s been run by the same family for 130 years and at $3 adults and $1.50 for under 15′ this was a no brainer. We thought about it for a while and then handed over our $12. It was fun.

We also lay on the lawns in the sun reading our books (yes the boys read) for about an hour and then made our way back to the hotel to pack and shower. We needed to be out of the boys’ room by noon and ours by 1pm. I stopped by Finagel a Bagel to buy a job lot of bagels for home and could not believe 2 bakers dozen cost just $19 – I’m sure a bagel is about £10 in Waitrose and these are artisan bagels. If you’re obsessed by bread as much as me you can watch a video of how they make them.

We spent the afternoon in the Science Museum which was pretty good but nowhere near as good ours which is also free compared to $23 each. Our final meal in Boston was in Cambridge at the Border Cafe again where we ate a little more safely. A quick change of shirt at the hotel and off to the airport – as I type this I’m reclined in Club Class wondering, a tiny bit, if the kids are okay back in Economy.
