Waterfront and all that

Posted by Paul Blacknell

We had a good lie in this morning since we weren’t to bed until well past midnight and also we decided to skip our morning Tabata session for the same reason. We elected to walk over to a bagel breakfast place called Finagel A Bagel which we had seen from the Dukw Tour and when we found it, it was actually Brueggers. They make any manner of complex bagel sandwich, the likes of which we never have at home, from a massive assortment of flavours of bagel baked on prem. I obviously elected to have cinnamon and raisin with strawberry jam just like I always do – so adventurous.

We wandered past the Old State House into Quincy Market which frankly is very touristy and I’ve never liked it. For some reason it took us over an hour to get through it.
We continued through to the Waterfront area which has been massively regenerated and has a lot of marina space – almost exclusively occupied by varying sizes of power boat – not many yachts. We had intended to visit the Boston Tea Party museum which you can pay $30 each to get in and you get to throw a fake bale of tea over the side of a, possibly, fake ship. So at $150 for the family we gave it a miss.
Lunch was at the Barking Crab where we enjoyed extremely fresh seafood. We split a 2lb lobster between us for a starter – extremely sweet and delicious and only $45. We hadn’t wanted to risk the 1lb and good choice – it would have been tiny. Although they look big it’s only about 20% meat. The boys loved it.

Our longest walk yet continued back up to the financial district where the boys and I left Helen to shop and we returned to the hotel (me) and a wander through the Prudential Mall and yet another visit to an Apple Store (boys). Helen returned to the hotel and none of us felt we could justify a meal as we were still feeling our lunch. I had a wander for a desert snack for the boys and we ended buying luxury cup cakes on Newbury Street (double chocolate) and ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s.

I sat up and watched a couple of hours as the Redsox annihilated the San Francisco Giants away 7-0 (I turned off the telly at 5-0 around the middle of the 6th). Dennis Eckersley (former pitcher for the Redsox) was a really interesting commentator.
