Whale watching in Provincetown

Posted by Paul Blacknell

We had to be up early as I’d pre-booked a whale watching trip for 1230 in Provincetown and we were concerned about traffic after yesterdays jams. However, we made good time and parked at the quiet end of the town and walked down the beach and main street wondering where the town centre actually was. Provincetown is made up of one way streets and seems to have been deliberately kept back from moving with the times – a good thing in America. Closer to the harbour though and things were getting ‘honky tonk’ but nothing like as tacky as we’ve seen elsewhere.

The whale watching trip itself lasted about 3 hours during which we saw a grand total of one whale – who seemed to stay under for well above the average of 4-6 minutes before coming up for air. The marine biologist on the tannoy was excellent at briefing us all on the history of Cape Cod and about the whales and how they live.

Sitting on a boat for 3 hours is pretty tiring as was the much slower drive back down Route 6 to Chatham. We made the 6.30pm cut off for the Corner Store and took our burritos back to a beach in Pleasant Bay – one of the many sheltered bodies of water on the southern end of Cape Cod.
